Gustav Holst was music master at St. Paul's Girls School in Hammersmith from 1905 to 1934 and wrote a number of pieces for the students there. This jig forms the first movement of the St. Paul's Suite (originally titled simply "Suite in C") written for the school string ensemble. Despite its origins it is surprisingly technical with frequent time signature changes, extreme dynamics and some very tricky (on saxophone at least) passages.
Here we have expanded the six part original to include the full saxophone choir, with optional parts for sopranissimo (soprillo), C-melody, and contrabass.
If you enjoyed this piece, have comments or corrections, we'd love to hear from you.
