Franz von Suppé was born near Split in Dalmatia (now in Croatia), but was taken as a boy to Vienna where he later became conductor of a theatre band. He spent thirty years as the director of music for the prestigious theatre "an der Wien". Although most of his works were well known and liked in Viennese circles, only one or two overtures gained wider appeal, most notably "Light Cavalry" and "Poet and Peasant".
