Beethoven wrote the incidental music for the play "Ruins of Athens" for the opening of a new theatre in Budapest. The Turkish March was the fifth of eleven movements. This suite has been reworked multiple times, including by Richard Strauss, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, and Franz Liszt.
