Chacony

Henry Purcell, arr. Peter Guthrie

Composed:
1680

Grouping:
SAATBb

Although the more normal term is "chaconne", Purcell elected to call this piece "chacony", a name that doesn't seem to appear elsewhere. Whatever the spelling, this chaconne (Z730) is a set of variations on a repeating bass theme in 3/4 time. In this case the theme is eight bars, starting in the lower parts before being repeated in the tenor then alto.
