Brahms' opus 109 was written for the people of Hamburg when he was granted honorary citizenship of the city in 1890 ("Fest- und Gedenksprüche" loosely translates as "Festive and Commemorative Sentences"). It celebrated the recent (1871) unification of Germany. It is a suite of three motets for eight voice a cappella chorus, and in the case of the third movement "Wo ist ein so herrlich Volk", primarily as two four part choirs.
This arrangement was first performed by the Kimbolton School saxophone group in 1998.
